Get acquainted with operating hours: Traditional banking hours in Nepal typically span from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays, with Saturdays observed as public holidays, leading to most banks being closed. Aligning your financial activities with these timings ensures you won’t encounter locked doors. Opt for recognized ATMs: With a wide array of ATMs scattered across Kathmandu and other major cities, it’s advisable to choose ATMs affiliated with reputable banks or located in well-lit, bustling areas to minimize risks such as card skimming or unauthorized surveillance. Mind the fees: Understanding the landscape of bank charges in Nepal is crucial, as fees can vary significantly. International cards used in Nepalese ATMs may incur additional charges, so consulting with your home bank regarding international transaction fees can prevent unexpected deductions. Carry multiple cards: Given the diversity of ATMs in Nepal, not all machines may accept every type of international card. Being equipped with a variety of cards, such as Visa, Mastercard, and other globally recognized ones, can mitigate potential cash-access issues. Keep an eye on withdrawal limits: ATM withdrawal limits in Nepal are in place to ensure secure transactions, typically ranging from NPR 10,000 to NPR 35,000 per transaction. Familiarizing yourself with these limits aids in effective financial planning. Exercise caution with currency exchange: When engaging in currency exchange in Nepal, prioritize official exchange counters or reputable banks to secure the most authentic foreign currency exchange rates without falling victim to potential scams.

The standard voltage of electricity in Nepal is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. If the standard voltage in your country is between 220 and 240 V, as it would be in the UK, Europe, Australia, and most of Asia and Africa, you can use your electric or electronic appliances in Nepal without a voltage converter. Likewise, if the standard voltage in your country is between 100 and 127 V, as it would be in the US, Canada and most South American countries, then you will need a voltage converter and a plug adapter before using your appliances. You may even need many different plug adapters if you are planning to travel to more than one country. In this case, it is recommended that you get a universal adapter and a converter kit if you will be carrying multiple electrical and electronic devices.
